Spiral shell on a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A spiral shell with ridged segments fills the frame, drawn with a dark outline and a wide tonal range. The coil shades from deep navy at the centre to lighter blue, with violet and pink streaks along the outer ridges and a few trailing tendrils at the lower edge. The tattoo sits on smooth skin at the top of the back near the shoulder, with a soft, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock keeper's wife would not let the children near the bottom gates, not since the spring the brown water came down off the hills and took the Pell boy. So Nell went alone at dusk, with a heel of bread in her apron pocket for the eel that lived under the sluice, and knelt on the wet stone where the barges tied up and felt in the silt with both hands.

Her grandmother had told her the river kept things it had swallowed, and that if you asked nicely and gave back something warm, it would part with one. Nell's fingers found a ridge first, then another, cool and ribbed like the cuff of a glove. She drew it up slowly. It was a coil of stone the size of a cabbage, navy at the heart and lightening outward to a blue like the sky before rain, with streaks of violet and rose running along each ridge. Weed trailed from its lip in threads that clung to her wrist.

The river did not speak. It only went quiet, the way a crowd does when someone is about to be told off. Nell understood she had to carry the thing up to the Sorrel Bell without looking back at the water, and she did, past the lock cottage and the sleeping ducks, the shell growing heavier with each step and warmer against her chest.

When she set it on the cabin roof her father was already lighting the stove. He looked at the shell, then at her wet knees, and said nothing. The coil turned once on the tin as if something inside it had wakened, and came to rest with its open mouth pointed upstream, towards the hills where the water came from.
