Every October the fair pulled onto the common at Stalham, and Dora Pell unpacked the hook-a-duck tank before anyone else was awake. Her husband Reg had planted sunflowers at the back of each pitch for thirty years, a row of them leaning over the guy ropes like men waiting for a bus. He had been gone a winter now, and she had not planted anything since.

On the third evening a lad with a fistful of pennies bet his last sixpence on a yellow duck. He lost, as they all did, and then asked why the big flower by the generator had its face turned towards the dodgems instead of the road. Dora had no answer ready. She looked at the dark stippled centre, ringed with its pale petals and dotted leaves, and saw that it had been turning all week, slowly, after the lights.

That night she walked out with a torch and a trowel and dug where Reg always dug, behind the candyfloss van, where the ground was soft from the trampling. She pressed in a handful of seeds from the tin in her coat pocket, though it was late in the year and they would never come up before the frost. It seemed the sort of thing you did anyway.

When the generator coughed and the last bulbs went out over the field, the whole row of stalks dipped their heads towards the dark patch where the dodgems had been. Dora stood in the mud until the cold got through her boots. Next spring, she thought, she would be back on this common, and something would be up.
