Colourful mandala tattoo on a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large circular mandala-style flower sits at the centre, with a smaller purple mandala overlapping it on the left and green leaf shapes above. The design uses bold dark outlines, layered petals and fine decorative detailing, with solid fills in pink, purple, teal, blue and yellow. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background, with a white top visible at the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Dilys Crane had been scrubbing the same brass stair rod since breakfast, and it still gleamed less than the sky over the breakwater. Upstairs, the lodger in room four was packing. She had paid for a fortnight and stayed nine days, and each morning she left a small drawing on the hall table under the teapot: a circle inside a circle, petals pressed into petals, all in the pastel inks she bought from the stationer on Fore Street.

Dilys kept the drawings in the biscuit tin with the Coronation picture on the lid. Pink for the big ones, she decided, the colour of the cliff rock at evening. Teal for the sea when the wind dropped. Yellow was for the lamp in the lifeboat house, which she could see from the back bedroom if she stood on the commode, though she never told anyone that.

The last drawing was not on the table. It was pinned inside the door of room four with the brass tack the lodger had asked for on her first day. It showed a pink flower with a purple one sitting over its left edge like a second moon. Dilys stood looking at it with the duster in her hand until the train whistle came up the valley.

When the lodger came down with her case, she glanced at the tin on the sideboard and said nothing about it. Dilys did not ask her to stay. She only said, "The tide turns at four, if you want the walk along the front," and the lodger said she would take the long way round. After the door had closed, Dilys unpinned the drawing, carried it down, and laid it on top of the others, then opened the front window so the smell of salt could get in.
