Triple moon line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a simple outline drawing of three shapes in a row: a crescent on the left, a full circle in the centre and a crescent on the right. The linework is a single even black stroke with no shading. The plain white background leaves the design isolated and fully visible.

The logbook for the Skerry light has a column for the moon, and my predecessor filled it in every night for thirty-one years in a hand so small I needed a magnifier to read it. Nobody had told me why. I learned in my second winter, when the relief boat stayed on the mainland for nine days and the tide tables went soft with damp, that the moon was the only clock the rock kept honest.

Each month he drew three marks in the margin. A sliver on the left for the waxing, a full disc in the middle, a sliver on the right for the waning. He used the same nib he kept for wind bearings and fog bell strikes, and I copied the habit without thinking about it, until the ink ran dry in March and I had to trace the shapes in pencil from the old ledger on the shelf.
On the night the lamp's lens cracked, the full moon came up over the sound so bright that I could read the tide gauge without a candle. Tomas Barr, who fished the creek with his father's dinghy, rowed out against the ebb because his net had snagged on our mooring. I saw him only as a shape on the silver water, then heard the knock of his oars against the landing steps. We had no lamp, only that white disc hanging over us, and he steered by it the whole way in.
Afterwards I sat with the book open and drew the three marks myself. My sliver was too thick and the disc wobbled, and I left them as they were. For once the middle one was the only thing on the page I had not needed to copy.
