Neo-traditional colour tattoo on an upper arm showing a split portrait of a red-haired woman and a man in a dark suit, with a UFO and green beam.

Split portrait with UFO and green beam on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bold split portrait of a woman with red hair and a man in a dark suit, with the two faces meeting down the centre. A UFO sits at the top right, and a green beam runs down beside the faces with lettering along it. The thick black outlines and saturated orange, green and skin tones give a flat, graphic finish, and the design fills the frame on a limb.

The lights came back to Harkwell Keep in October, a pale saucer hanging over the south curtain wall at two in the morning. Mrs Pargeter from the farm below rang the trust to say her cows had stopped lying down, so I was sent up the hill with a clipboard, a torch and a flask of tea I never finished. My job was to log what I saw and nothing else.

Ruth Calloway came up on the Thursday with a tripod and a grudge. She believed in nothing she could not measure, and she measured everything, while I stood in the lee of the gatehouse trying not to look as keen as I was. The beam came down green through the roofless chapel, thin as fishing line, and lit the bare stone where the altar had been. Ruth wrote the time in her notebook. Her pen was shaking, and she pretended it was the cold.

We kept the vigil for three weeks. Ruth said the glow was marsh gas off the moat, a trick of damp and moonlight, and I kept quiet and drank my cold tea. On the last night the beam widened and the saucer tilted like a coin being turned over. Ruth walked out into the green with her face half in shadow, the sceptic in her gone quiet and something older looking out through it. She turned and said, very clearly, "Put it in the log."

So I did. Visibility good, wind none, one observer missing, one present and unafraid. Then, underneath, in my own handwriting, the last thing she told me before the light took her up: come up and see.
