Two men shaking hands with flames on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two men in dark suits facing each other and shaking hands, with the composition mirrored across the calf. The figure on the right is partly engulfed in orange and yellow flames that rise from his head and run down his side and legs. The figures are shaded in soft greys and blacks, with the flames providing the only warm colour against the dark background.

The dodgems had been switched off for the night, and the only sound left on the field was the generator humming behind the candy floss van. Leonard Pym came across the mud in his good grey suit, the one he kept for funerals and contracts, and held out his hand to Eli Varga before either of them had properly stopped walking.

Eli had breathed fire for the Harrow and Vane Travelling Show since he was nineteen, and he knew what a handshake in a field meant. Pym had bought the lease on the riverside ground, and the bargain was simple: the show could stay one more season if Eli walked the gravel each night with a torch in his mouth while the crowd screamed for more. Pym's grip was dry and certain. Eli took it.

The fire grew with the seasons. By October it had climbed to his collar, and the queues at the gates were longer than ever. Pym counted the takings in his caravan with the door shut and never once looked at the scorch marks spreading across the carpet, or at the way Eli's shirt smelt of smoke when he came to collect his wage.

In November the fair packed up in the dark. Pym drove the first wagon out with the lease folded in his breast pocket, one corner blackened. Eli stood in the empty field with his right hand still warm, watching the last of the light die along his sleeve, and understood that a man could be paid in full for a thing he could never set down.
