The tattoo shows a stylised head and shoulders of a man with a large moustache, slicked back hair and blue eyes, framed by a twisted rope oval on a blue background. A red rose with green leaves sits beneath the frame. Bold black outlines define the forms, with flat areas of red, blue, green and skin tone and a few small highlights.

Sit down, the lot of you, the bride's uncle has been waving that glass at me since the soup, and I'll not be hurried by a man with a camera. Right. You all know the rope that hangs over the chapel gate in Hebden? Old Ezra Coyle twisted that himself, the year before the mill shut. He had a moustache on him you could have hung a coat from, waxed out to each side like a pair of handlebars, and he never once went into a room without combing his hair first.

Every spring he wanted a red rose for the Sunday he proposed to Mary Hirst, and the only bush in the valley that flowered in March grew behind the vicarage wall. Ezra climbed that wall with his shears clamped in his teeth, and every spring the vicar's wife came out with a broom. Three springs running she chased him down the lane. The fourth spring she stood at the gate with her arms folded and said, "Well, you'd better make it worth the thorns."

So he did. He cut the best rose in the valley, pressed it in his Sunday hymnbook, and went down on one knee in the rain outside the chapel, rope round his shoulders like a lifebelt. Mary said yes before he'd finished the question, which is why, I'm told, he was still talking when the bells started.

So raise your glasses to the happy pair, and mind the thorns on the way out.
