Spool of thread on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded spool of thread sits on the forearm, with loops of thread curling out from both ends and a dotted line trailing toward the wrist. The linework is fine and clean, with cross-hatched shading on the spool body to give it dimension. The tattoo is in black and grey against the skin, set on a background of cream lace and fabric scraps.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Edith had been told the Hallam spool was the last of the grey silk, and that no one in Nottingham would sell her more. So when the finishing room emptied for the dinner bell, she sat with the old spool on her knee and worked the loose end free, expecting a few yards at most.

The thread kept coming. It ran across the boards, under the frame of the lace machine, out through the gap in the sash where the paint had split, and down the wall of the yard. She followed it with her hand against the brick, past the coal store and the dye vats, until it looped around the gatepost like something tied on purpose.

At the gate stood Mr Ashby from the counting house, holding the torn edge of a christening veil that had gone missing in March. The grey silk ran into its hem. "My daughter's," he said. "I was told it was lost to the mill."

Edith took the end from him and wound it back onto the spool, turn by turn, until the veil lay folded in her lap and the silk ran home in a neat line to the room where she had started. She never learned who had hidden the veil or why it had wandered. She only knew that the spool was empty by the time the bell rang again, and that the mending was finished by morning.
