A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been falling on the Saturday market since dawn, and old Tomas Vell kept his awning up over a stall of mended boots, though nobody had come to buy any. He was telling the lads from the fish stalls about the ball that came down the hill from the north field in the winter of the flood, trailing fire behind it like a comet with bad manners.

It rolled through the cabbages, Tomas said, and took a bite out of the cheese man's tarpaulin, who swore in three languages. Nobody could kick it. The children who tried found their boots full of light and their toes gone numb. So the town did what towns do and sent for Ines Harrow, a widow who sewed blue banners for the mill workers and knew the old pattern of waves and stripes that ran inside every shield in the valley.

She walked up the hill with a needle tucked in her collar and a spool of dotted thread that unwound behind her like a vine. At the top she found the ball sitting in the wet grass, steaming gently, its trails curled like a horse's mane. She did not chase it. She sat down, hummed the old tune the mill girls used to sing, and stitched a small crest onto the flat of her palm. Then she held it out, and the ball settled into it like a sleepy cat.

When she came back down, the rain had stopped and the market was loud again. Tomas will tell you the ball is still in her house, under a blue cloth, and that if you ask nicely she will show you the stitches. He has never asked her himself. He says the trick is to keep the story moving, because a story that stops in the rain goes soft at the edges.
