Blue swirl and leaf design

Colour · Flash

The design shows a solid circle with a small pointed leaf at its upper right, joined to a long curling stroke that crosses over itself to form a figure-eight or infinity-like loop. The linework is smooth, bold and filled, with no shading or fine detail. It is rendered in a single pale blue on a plain white background, centred on the frame.

Nobody at Gull Steps House paid in coin after the storm the year the pier went. They paid in whatever the sea had left them, and Nan Virrick took it without remark. A boot buckle, a brass button, once a crab pot full of oysters that she cooked for three days.

A lodger called Tobias Crane came in October with a wet coat and no money at all. He offered a pear, round and bruised, the last of a tree that grew up out of a wrecked dinghy on the shingle. Nan turned it over in her hand and asked where the leaf had gone. He said the wind had it. She gave him the attic room that looked over the water.

Each night he went down to the steps and walked the figure of eight the tide drew in the wet sand, out along one curl and back along the other, never once lifting his heel. Nan watched from the kitchen window with the lamp turned low. On the ninth night the tide did not come back the way it went. It stayed out past the rocks and left a silver road across the bay.

Tobias went out along it with the pear in his pocket, and Nan followed with a lantern, because someone had to count the lodgers in. At the far end she found him sitting on a stone with his coat folded beside him, the pear split open in his lap and a green leaf pushing out of the cut. Pay the house, he said, and I'll stop walking the sand. She took the pear. The tide came in behind her as she climbed, but she never once got her feet wet, and the room at the top has been kept for him ever since, the bed always made, the window always open a crack to let the sea in.
