The box came off the Thursday train smelling of printer's ink and wet pennies, and Mr Hollis at the pier kiosk swore nobody in Saltmarsh would pay a shilling for gold they had to stick on themselves. You said they would. You had seen the peacock feathers in the tall glass case at the Grand Hotel, their black eyes glinting like boot buttons, and you reckoned a girl could wear a bit of that for a week and call it a holiday.

By the second Saturday the sheets had gone. The herring girls came up the front in twos, their hands still sharp with brine, and bought scales by the strip. You sat on an upturned crate with a damp flannel and a bowl of water, teaching them to hold their breath while the backing peeled away, the silver leaves lifting one by one like stalks of barley in a wind. Nobody ever got the lattice straight the first time. Nobody minded.

Jean from the chandlery bought the last peacock. She had no use for it, she said, only that she wanted to see whether the eye would stay black through a whole summer of sea. You told her it would. You were not certain, so you kept the last gold scale back for yourself, folded into the tin with the lighthouse painted on its lid.

September came in grey and the shutters went down early. On the last evening you cut the strip with the good scissors, wet it on the rain barrel, and pressed it to the inside of your forearm, counting to thirty under your breath the way the old men counted tides. When you peeled the paper back the gold lay flat and bright. The wind came up the prom and tried it, and it held.
