Two arrows tattoo flash design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows two arrows, one above and one below, each with feathered fletching at the tail and a pointed head. The fletching is drawn with solid black shapes and fine hatched lines, while the shafts use broken dashes and small dots. The image is plain black ink on white with no shading or colour, and the arrows sit centrally with plenty of empty space around them.

The brothers had not shared a bow since the north tower fell, and by midsummer they had stopped sharing the well too. Their mother set them a contest across the moat. Whoever shot furthest over the broken curtain wall would have the keep, and the other would take the cold room under the stair.

Tam cut his arrow from ash and notched a short dash into the shaft for every night he had opened the gate to strangers. Osric marked his with dots, one for each debt he said was owed to him. They were fine arrows, both of them, fletched with grey goose feather bound in black thread, and each had a head of tinned iron filed to a point.
At dusk they loosed together. The arrows crossed above the water, one climbing as the other fell, and for a moment they looked like two hands reaching past each other. Tam's struck the reeds on the far bank. Osric's dropped at the feet of their mother, who stood in the gateway with her cloak pulled tight and had not once looked away.
Nobody won. When the brothers waded out for the arrows they found each had landed where the other had stood to shoot, as though they had only been trading the same patch of mud. Their mother said it was the only honest shooting she had seen from either of them. They carried the arrows back through the broken wall and laid them side by side on the sill of the north tower, and the wind came in through the open roof and turned the feathers all one way.
