The snake came up the shaft in March, or so the lads say. Nobody saw it go down. Dai Rowe found it coiled round the pump rods at the four-fathom level, grey as wet slate with its rings of pale spots, and he said it looked at him the way a magistrate does. He left his lamp and his dinner and came up blind with fright. Since then the men have taken to tapping the timbers before they go in, and nobody whistles underground.

Then there is the blue dragon head, which the cat wears across her back like a bib, teeth bared at nothing. Old Mr Hosken says it is a guardian and that the cat is only lending it out. I think it is a painted thing from some foreign ship, dressed up by a sailor with too much time on his hands, but I have noticed the air in the lower levels has been sweeter since the cat took to sleeping by the lamp house.

Come home for Sunday. Bring the brass collar you swear I threw out, and tell Dai the snake has gone quiet, which is either good news or the worst news we have had.
