Cat and dragon tattoo on a lower leg
Japanese · Calf · Colour · Photo
A split image shows a cat with teal eyes and black and grey markings curled around a blue and orange dragon with a yellow-outlined head and swirling cloud shapes. The left panel is a close crop of the dragon, showing bold black outlines, layered scales and flame-like orange and red accents. The right panel shows the full piece on the lower leg, with the cat's tail curling down to the ankle against a plain background.

The cat would not come off the wall behind the chip shop, so you stopped pretending you were only going home by the long way. Its eyes caught the sodium light like something lit from inside, teal and steady, and every time you slowed it looked back at you with the patience of a landlady who has seen you drunk before. It led you down the canal steps on Tanners Lane, past the shuttered bakery, to where the laundry steam hung low over the water and turned the lamps to smudged gold.

There, under the bridge arch, the dragon was coiled in the damp. Its scales were the blue of a gas ring just lit, its whiskers trailed like brass wire, and the orange flames along its belly flickered without any wind to move them. The cat sat down at its foot as if waiting for a bus that everyone knew was late. You stood with your hands in your coat pockets and heard, very clearly, a low voice say that it had been holding the fire down for a long time, and that the city had stopped noticing the heat because nothing had burned yet.
You asked what it wanted. The dragon only lifted one eyelid, and the cat stood up, stretched, and walked in a neat line towards the steps, its tail held high and crooked at the tip. You followed it up into the street. Behind you the steam closed over the water, and one by one the lamps along the canal went out, as if somebody had finally let a breath go.
