Stretching cat on the side of the torso

Other · Mixed · Photo

A cat is shown mid-stretch, with its body arched low, front legs extended and tail curling up at the top left. The linework is dark and fine on the outline, while the body is built up with soft grey shading and highlights. Yellow-green eyes and small purple tones on the tail and legs are the only colour in an otherwise grey composition.

The cat had been in the left-luggage room since the 10.15 from Carlisle, and Ruth had stopped trying to shift it. It lay along the top of the radiator with its back legs braced and its front paws stretched across the lino, as though the whole room were a long yawn it had been waiting to finish. Every time she reached for the broom it unfolded further, its tail curling up past the shelves like a question nobody had asked.

Nobody claimed it. The station cat had been a legend before Ruth's time, a grey thing that rode the platforms and vanished into the signal box whenever a guard blew a whistle. This one had yellow-green eyes that caught the sodium lamps from the platform, and when the tannoy announced the late train to Leeds it flattened itself into a low arc, shoulders down, and slipped under the gap in the shutter.

Ruth found the parcel that evening, wedged behind a crate of seed catalogues nobody had collected since spring. The label had gone brown and was addressed to a Mrs Eileen Marr at a farm near Settle. Inside was a tin of purple sweets gone soft and a brass collar with no name on it. She turned it over twice, then set it on the shelf where the cat could see it.

By morning the collar was gone and the shutter was up a hand's width. Ruth found the grey shape on the platform bench, stretched full length in the first thin light, its tail hooked over the edge like a finished signature. When the 6.12 pulled in, it did not look up. It simply went on stretching, and Ruth decided she would post the parcel herself.
