Squirrel tattoo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A squirrel sits upright with its large bushy tail curling down the outside of the thigh, and its front paws held together at the chest. The fur is rendered with soft shading and fine strands in greys and browns, giving it a realistic, dimensional look. A framed plaque for a tattoo festival's Best Ink award is held in the foreground, and a patterned red top and denim shorts are visible above.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The river was the border that year, and the squirrel was the only creature the two wardens could not stop at it. Old Tomas on the western bank kept a rope of tally marks, and Anka on the eastern side kept a ledger, and neither trusted the other's count of the grain carts. So each morning a red squirrel ran the length of the bridge rail with a knotted thread in its jaws, and each evening it came back carrying the other side's answer.

Nobody remembered who first asked it. The wardens fed it hazelnuts from their pockets and argued about whose nuts were better. Tomas said the squirrel liked his because they were salted. Anka said it came to her because she never shouted. The squirrel sat between them on the rail with its tail curled down over the stone like a pale fern, and it looked at each of them in turn with the same patience, as if it had heard both arguments before and found them tedious.
In the third autumn the thread came back knotted wrong. Tomas counted forty carts, Anka counted forty-one, and the squirrel would not take either number. It sat on the rail with its front paws pressed together at its chest, waiting, until Anka walked out onto the bridge herself and looked at the wheels. One cart had lost a spoke. The extra load had been hidden under sacking and sent over in the dark while both of them were watching the rail.
They never agreed on much after that. But they walked the bridge together at dusk, and the squirrel went ahead of them with its tail up, counting the planks.
