Joker and Batman upper arm tattoo

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo on the upper arm shows the Joker's face with green and purple hair, a wide toothy grin and red-rimmed eyes, with HAHAHA lettering across the shoulder and a Batman figure below. The shading is smooth and painterly, with bright greens, purples and oranges set against dark blacks and greys. The arm is cropped against a tie-dye top, with a framed picture and a wall notice in the blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The laugh gets to you before the headlights do. It comes out of a radio wedged on the dashboard of a stalled Ford at the lip of the Calder Wells road, hahaha, hahaha, bouncing off the rock cuttings, and when you stop the engine and step out into the heat the man perched on the bonnet turns his head slowly, as if he has been expecting you since Tuesday.

He says his name is Ruiz, though the sun-bleached lettering on the mudguard says otherwise. The car has been dead since the salt flats, he says, and the spare is a joke. You have a jack, a bottle of water and a growing sense that he is not entirely asking for help. He grins the whole time he talks, a grin with too many teeth in it, and the purple rag knotted at his wrist is the same colour as the sky going the shade of a bruise over the mesa.

By the time you have the wheel off, he has told you three different stories about how the cutting got its name, each one ending in a punchline he delivers to nobody in particular. You ask him which one is true. He laughs until he has to wipe his eyes, then answers, quite calmly, that none of them are and all of them are, and that the road is the only thing out here that remembers properly. You tighten the last bolt, climb back behind the wheel, and in the mirror he is already waving, bright and delighted, as the dust rises between you.

Somewhere past the mesa the radio clicks on by itself, and the laugh comes back, patient as a dog, rolling along behind you all the way to the town line.
