Stacked book spines with lettering on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stack of colourful books, drawn with bold black outlines, is tattooed on a lower arm and tapers toward the wrist. Each spine carries lettering in a classic traditional style, reading as a playful line about books. The palette of teal, pink, red, yellow and green is applied with solid fills and light shading against plain skin on a wooden background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody comes to the bookstall at Cleeve Junction for a novel at twenty to seven on a wet Tuesday. They come because the 18:12 has been cancelled again and they need something to hold. I have sold paperbacks from this trolley for eleven years, pricing spines with a grey pencil and listening to the tannoy mangle the names of towns.

The man who came in that night was called Gerald Pook. He had a sleeve of tickets in one hand and a tatty Bradshaw in the other, and he wanted to know if I had anything with more to it than trains. I said we had a crime novel set on the Settle line, two westerns and a cookery book with a broken spine. He sighed the way people sigh at a sandwich left out in the rain, then bought the cookery book and read the chapter on pastry on the platform while the rain came sideways off the canopy.

When the 18:12 finally crawled in at half past eight, he left the book on my counter with a ticket folded inside the cover. It was a single to Carlisle, dated 1987, punched once and never used. On the back, in capitals, he had written THERE IS MORE, and under that, in smaller biro, he had added NOT MUCH MORE, then crossed out the second line so hard the pen had torn the card.

I still keep that ticket in the cash tin under the till, behind the spare pencils. Some evenings, when the departure boards go blank, I take it out and look at the torn card, and I think the crossed-out line was the honest bit.
