Stacked books and coffee cup on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of three stacked books topped with a steaming cup of coffee, shown on a forearm against white bedding. The books are drawn with fine outlines and light grey shading along their edges and spines, and the steam is rendered in thin wisps. The image is black and white, with the tattoo centred and the arm filling the vertical frame.

Nell had the ovens lit by four and the first tray of bloomers cooling by half past, which left her an hour before the delivery van to do what she had promised herself every morning for a month: finish the book. It was a library copy with a cracked spine and a pencilled price from a jumble sale, and it had been sitting on the flour bin since Tuesday, wedged under the scale and going white with dust.

Her mum had written in the margin of page 112, a neat note in blue biro that read "don't trust him", and Nell had been arguing with it all week. She poured her coffee from the dented pot, set the mug on the stack she had made of the other books she was meant to return, and turned the page with a floury thumb.
The steam from the cup curled up past the spine of the top book. Outside the window the sky above the car park had started to go the colour of weak tea. A driver knocked twice on the back door and called out that he had the rye.
She read the last chapter standing up, the way she always read when the ovens needed her. The man was not trustworthy after all, and Nell found she did not mind. She closed the book and slid it onto the pile, and that was when she saw the ring her mug had left on the cover, right over the author's name. The library would never forgive it. She laughed out loud in the empty kitchen anyway, and wrote the stain down as her own small contribution to the story.
