Fine line tulip on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single tulip is drawn in thin black linework, with a short stem curving down to a pointed leaf, and a curved line wraps around the wrist above the flower. The photograph is black and white, showing the inner wrist and forearm against a plain light background, with a plaid sleeve at the top right. The design is minimal, with no shading and plenty of open skin around it.

Mind the step, it's slick where the gulls have been at it. Now, you'll want to hear about Ada Pruett and the tulip seed, because nobody else on this quay remembers it right. Her father sailed the Lark out of Whitby with a crew of four and a cat that could smell a squall before the glass moved. The winter the herring went north, he came home with nothing in his net but a paper packet from a Dutch trader, six bulbs wrapped in wet sacking, and a grin like he'd robbed a bishop.

He planted them in a tin bucket on the sill, and every morning Ada went down the cliff path to watch the boats come in past the pier, counting hulls, counting men. The bulbs sulked all March. Come April one shoot pushed up pale as a candle, then another, and by the first warm week there was a tulip standing on the sill with its cup closed tight, like it was keeping a secret from the wind.

The Lark never came back up the harbour mouth. Ada was nine. She kept the bucket going for eleven years, and when she finally lifted the bulbs out to share among the widows, she found one had split its own skin and sent a single green stalk curling down towards the cold floorboards, reaching for a crack of light that wasn't there. She knelt, she set it in the window, and she turned the pot so the bend faced the sea.
