Blue police box and book tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A blue police box with its door panels is fused with the front edge of a closed book, whose yellow and tan pages show along the base. The blue sections are shaded with lighter and darker tones and outlined in black, giving the design a solid, dimensional look. The design sits centred on a smooth area of skin, with the edges of the image cropped close to the artwork.

Mind the kerb and keep your hands where I can see them, because the police box on Lantern Row is not the one you think it is. Sixty winters it has stood under the same flickering lamp, blue as a bruise, its little windows lit from inside by nothing anyone can name. The constable walks past it every night and never once tries the handle, which is how the box likes it.

Some say it arrived with the rain in 1931. My grandmother said it was a library book left out on the step, swollen to the size of a wardrobe, waiting for someone brave enough to open it. Nobody did, not for years. Then a girl called Marguerite Fenn came up the hill with a satchel of overdue volumes and a temper to match, and found the thing sitting crooked against the railings, its gilt lettering rubbed to nothing.
She pushed the cover, the way you would push a sticky door, and the door gave. Inside there was no telephone, only shelves climbing into the dark, and on every shelf a page had come loose and was turning slowly in a draught from nowhere. She read the first one aloud. It was her own name, written in a hand she did not recognise, with a date three days ahead.
She returned every overdue book that night, then climbed in after them. The lamp on Lantern Row has not gone out since, and on quiet nights the constable swears he hears someone reading aloud, always one page behind the clock.
