Stacked food layers on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo shows several flat food shapes stacked in a loose column, resembling bread, strips of meat and a patty. The linework is fine and the shapes are filled with stippled dot shading that gives them some depth. The tattoo is in black and grey, placed centrally on a pale arm against a soft, blurred background.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate since Tuesday, and by the third night the only thing still moving in the kitchen was the bacon. Nell Ashdown stood over the griddle with the wireless turned low, listening for a plough that never came. Behind her the stranded guests had given up on conversation and were playing cards for matchsticks.

Old Ferris from the mill had sent back his order three times, each with a fresh condition. Bread toasted, not soft. Patty pink in the middle, not grey. No lettuce, because lettuce was a lie told by people who had never been cold. Nell built it on the board the way her mother had taught her, from the bottom up, pressing each layer flat with the heel of her hand so nothing would slide.

She was halfway through the second round when the power guttered and the lights went brown. In the half dark the stack held its shape, a loose tower of bread and meat and bread, and Nell found she was holding her breath, as if one wrong movement would bring the whole thing down. The gas hissed. Somebody in the bar swore at a losing hand.

Ferris ate half, pushed the top slice to the edge of the plate, and said it was the first thing in the valley all week that had stayed where it was put. Nell didn't answer. Through the hatch she saw the window turn silver as the plough lights came over the ridge, and she wiped the board clean and started on the next order without looking up.
