Fine line spiral and loops on an arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous fine line runs diagonally upward, then breaks into a small zigzag, two interlocking loops and a curled spiral at the base. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits against plain skin, with a dark strap or top and a blurred background at the edges of the frame.

Tuesday, 14 March. The needle has been drawing the same thin line since the night shift started, a clean diagonal across the drum, and I have been telling myself it is only the wind on the hill. Harry from the depot says the wind does not set a stylus. He says a lorry on the Carrow road would leave a fuzz, not this.

Wednesday. Found the trace at six. It runs straight for most of a page, then the stylus begins to shiver into a zigzag as neat as stitching, so tight I had to hold the lamp to it. Then two loops, one tied through the other, the way Mam tied her good ribbons. The last inch is a spiral, round and round, drawn in one long breath until the ink ran dry. Nothing in the county has a fault within forty miles. I checked twice.
Thursday. Took the chart down to the pit office and laid it on Mr Okafor's desk. He traced the zigzag with his thumb and said it looked like a fishing line pulled hard by something that did not want to be landed. Then he asked whether I had felt anything. I had not. I was asleep in the cab with my boots on. But the cups on the shelf were all turned the same way, facing the window, as if they had been waiting.
I have pinned the chart above the desk. Every morning I unroll it and read the spiral from the outside in, which is the wrong way, and it still ends in the same small curl where the stylus lifted off and the paper went quiet.
