Stag and owl calf tattoos

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two calves are shown side by side, each carrying a large tattoo of an anthropomorphic animal. The left calf has a stag wearing black-rimmed glasses, a shirt and tie, with peonies and leaves around it, and the right has an owl in round glasses and a blue dress with a red spotted scarf, under pink roses. The work uses bold outlines, smooth shading and bright colour on a light skin tone, against a pale wooden floor with the wearer's feet in red peep-toe heels.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The first hard frost had the lane glazed like a dropped plate when Mr Harrow came up from the wood in his good suit, the one he kept for funerals and the Christmas dance at the village hall. He stopped at our gate and wiped his black-rimmed glasses on his tie, which is how I knew he had not come to see the sheep.

My aunt Ada was in the kitchen with her sleeves rolled and a red spotted scarf knotted at her throat against the draught from the back door. She had been the village schoolmistress for thirty years and still pushed her round glasses up into her grey feathers when she was thinking. She did not look up when he knocked. "The pump has frozen, Edwin," she said. "You'll have to come round the back like everybody else."

He came round the back. I stayed by the hay bales and listened, because nobody sends a boy away from a kitchen in a frost. He talked about the beeches he had let fall in the wood, and the pink roses she had planted along the wall the summer her husband went to sea and never came back. She listened with the kettle in her hands. Then she set it down, took off her glasses, and laughed, a dry hoot like a gate swinging on its hinge.

Come spring the pump was mended and the roses on the wall were out again. Mr Harrow walked up our lane every Sunday after that in his suit, and Ada never once asked him to use the front gate. I think of that frost whenever I see the two of them at the hall, her wing tucked through his arm, both of them still wearing their glasses.
