A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Harbour Row could say when Miss Bowie started wearing the pink ribbon, only that by the spring of 1957 she had it tied at her throat and the whole street was too fond of her to argue. She was a sandy, sharp-faced thing who owned the top step of Mrs Farrant's bakery and considered the pigeons a personal insult. When the council men came to clear the alley, she sat on the bonnet of their van until they gave up and ate their sandwiches with her.

The trouble came with the photographer. He set up a tripod outside the chapel hall, promised a shilling a print for the Gazette, and asked for the cat to sit still. Miss Bowie did not sit still. She stalked off along the railings, dropped into the coal hole, and reappeared an hour later with a sooty ribbon and a look that dared anybody to comment.

Mrs Farrant kept the one good print in her apron pocket. It was blurred at the edges, but the bow was perfect, and she pinned it above the flour bins where it yellowed with steam and years. When the bakery finally closed, the cat walked out through the open door, down the steps, and never came back, though for decades after, a fresh pink ribbon appeared on the railings every spring.
