Rose and rabbits on two calves

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

Two legs are shown from above the knee to the lower calf, each carrying a tattoo. The left leg has a rose enclosing a small illustrated face, with a white rabbit and a pocket watch below it, while the right leg has a rose at the top, a brown rabbit in a red coat and waistcoat with a pocket watch, and a small pink star. The bold outlines, filled colour and soft shading give the piece a neo-traditional look against a plain pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The watch had stopped at twenty past four, which Edith Quill knew because she had been staring at it since breakfast and it had not once moved in her favour. It was a brass thing with a cracked glass, left on the counter of her repair shop by a man who had promised to collect it on Tuesday and had not been seen since. Edith was sure it would be fine. Watches, in her experience, only needed someone patient enough to sit with them.

The rabbit arrived at a quarter past nine on Thursday, though the shop had opened at nine, and he said so himself with great offence. He wore a red coat with brass buttons and a waistcoat mended neatly at one pocket, and he held out a paw for the watch as if it had always been his by right. "You are late," Edith told him. "I am never late," he said. "I am, at most, early for the next thing."

He paid with three old coins that were not quite the right shape, then stood tapping his foot while she opened the back of the case. Inside, a tiny white rabbit with a waistcoat of its own had been painted onto the face of the movement, peering out from behind a wheel. Edith had seen the same painter's work on a dozen cases in the drawer, always with a rose somewhere in the corner, always slightly out of step with the time.

She wound the watch and set the hands to the hour. The second hand jerked forward as if it had been waiting all week for permission. The rabbit checked his pocket, nodded once, and hurried out without a word of thanks. Through the window Edith saw him stop beside the window box, where the roses had been white that morning, and watched them slowly turn the colour of his coat.
