Crowned cat tattoos on both feet
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
Two cat face tattoos sit on the tops of a pair of feet, each with a bold jewelled crown above and a necklace or collar below. The left cat is ginger with yellow eyes and a blue collar, while the right is a tabby with green eyes and a pink gem pendant. The linework is heavy and dark, the shading is soft and the colour is rich and saturated against the plain skin.

The snow had sealed the Fell Gate for nine days when the innkeeper's wife found the two cats asleep on the flour sacks, each wearing a crown no bigger than a thimble. Nobody in Hobb's Rest owned a crown. Nobody in the valley owned cats that could stand still long enough to be measured for one.

The ginger one was called Marmalade by the children, though her proper name, she made clear by the look she gave anyone who used the other, was Ysolde. The tabby was Pell. They had come in out of a blizzard the winter before and had never left, and they had never once let the innkeeper's wife, Maud Tarrant, put them out. Each night they walked the length of the taproom with their tails held straight up, inspecting the drovers, and each night they chose a stranger to sit beside.
On the ninth night a pedlar came in with a wet pack and a cough and a necklace of grey pearls he claimed had belonged to a drowned queen. He laid it on the table to dry. Pell stepped onto it with one paw, the way a cat tests ice, and the pearls, which had been cold and dull, went warm and soft as milk. The pedlar reached for them. Ysolde sat on his wrist. He did not reach again.
In the morning the pass was open and the pedlar was gone. The two cats had their crowns and their collars, and the pearls were back on Pell's neck, fastened to a pink stone the size of a pea. Maud Tarrant never asked where they came from. She only swept the taproom, set out two saucers of cream, and said to nobody in particular that a house with queens in it would never want for mice.
