Stag, fox and flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A stag's head sits at the centre of the design, with antlers wrapped in flowers and beads and small blue birds perched among the branches. Below, a fox and a second animal are partly hidden among pink and peach blossoms, with soft shading that gives the piece a watercolour feel. Pastel teal, pink, peach and brown dominate, and the composition runs vertically down the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud had been told the stag would not come down to the blossom orchard once the frost lifted, but the frost had lifted three weeks ago and there he was, standing in the wet grass with dye-works smoke drifting past his antlers. She kept her paints in a biscuit tin under the cart seat and her brushes wrapped in an old sheet, and she did not move when he lowered his head to the windfalls.

The fox came first, as foxes do, cutting along the hedge with a hen's feather stuck to one ear. Behind it a hare, grey at the ears and pale at the belly, sat up in the peach-coloured clover and watched Maud the way a customer watches a man about to haggle. Nobody in Kelling Mill trusted anyone who worked with dye, and nobody trusted the stag either, though he had never once taken a thing that was not his.

Maud had a commission due for the squire's wife: a pale teal shawl, to be dipped in the new bluebell vat, with the hem pink. Maud knew how the colour would go wrong. She told the stag this. He blinked, a blue tit landed on the nearest antler, and she laughed for the first time that week and dipped the shawl in the vat anyway.

When she unrolled it at the manor the hem came out peach, the colour of the blossom the fox had been lying in, and the squire's wife paid double and asked no questions. Maud kept the offcut, folded in the biscuit tin beside the paints, and every October she left the gate open at the bottom of the orchard.
