Green horned dinosaur and UFO on upper arm

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, centred on a mint green horned dinosaur with red eyes and a frilled head. Above it sit a silver UFO, an orange ringed planet, red comet-like streaks and a dark feathered wing, set against blue sky and pink clouds. Bold black outlines and smooth, flat colour fills give it a cartoonish, saturated look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had been coaxing the dinosaur down the pass since breakfast, and at the cloud line it sat back on its haunches and refused to take another step. Its frill had flushed a pale, indignant green. Above the ridge the sky had gone the blue of cheap ink, and a silver saucer hung over the col like a dropped coin.

Her cousin Tobias, who had walked mules over that pass for thirty years, chewed his heel of bread and said the beast had seen the ringed planet rising and would not be argued with. "It's looked at that orange thing all week," he said. "Calls it the cheese."

They had found the creature in the snowmelt, curled and hornless in a scree bowl, and nursed it on goat milk until the horns came through like spring shoots. Pell named it Mercy because nobody else would. It had never shown the slightest interest in the saucer, which had been circling the peaks since the feast of St Brannoc, scattering sparks over the sheep like a farmer scattering seed. The red streaks that shot across the sky at dusk made the sheep bolt, and the dogs followed them, and Pell spent most evenings collecting bells from the gorse.

Then the saucer dipped its rim low over the col, and a red streak fell past the ridge, and Mercy stood up on her back legs and bellowed at the sky. The silver disc tilted, very slightly, the way a hat tips to a neighbour. Tobias swallowed his bread. Pell understood then that the beast had never been refusing the pass. It had only been waiting for the planet to notice. She coiled the rope over her shoulder, held out the last of the goat cheese, and started walking up.
