Stag head in watercolour and ink
Colour · Flash
A stag's head and upper neck, shown from the front with its antlers spreading wide above the ears. The linework is fine ink with soft watercolour washes in brown, rust and grey that build the fur and antler shading. The subject is centred on a cream background with generous empty space around the antlers.

The bell in Harrowmere had not rung since the flood, so when the stag came down through the reed beds at dusk, Ada Pell heard its hooves before she saw the antlers. She was mending the eel traps on the lower causeway, her sleeves wet to the elbow, and she did not look up at once. Her grandmother had taught her that the old creatures liked to be ignored until they chose to be seen.

The stag stopped at the broken gate where the drowned orchard began. Its antlers spread wider than the gate was tall, and the late light caught the tips and turned them the colour of rust and strong tea. Ada noticed that the animal was not thin, as the rest of the village had become, but its flank was streaked with grey, as if it had been standing a long while in the rain. It watched her with one dark eye and then the other, patient as a clerk.
She had a question ready, the one everyone in Harrowmere wanted answered: where had the water gone. Instead she said, "You'll want the high road. The bridge is out." The stag tipped its head, as though weighing the offer, then turned and walked not toward the hills but into the orchard, where the apple trees stood knee-deep in brown water.
Ada waited until the last flick of its tail had vanished among the branches. Then she bent back to the trap, found a silver eel still thrashing in the mesh, and noticed for the first time that the water along the causeway had stopped rising. She did not tell anyone. She only walked home the long way, past the gate, and left the bell rope hanging where it was.
