Mandala design on the back of a hand
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical ornamental mandala with scrolling petals and a central motif covers the back of the hand and extends onto the wrist. Fine stippled dotwork fills the shading, while heavier black outlines define the edges and scrolls. The tattoo is entirely black and grey on pale skin, with three small solid teardrops hanging below the central design.

The big top has been patched so many times that its original blue survives only in the seams, and you spend the winter quarters at Spilsby with a lamp hung from a tent pole, pricking dots into paper because the stencil Mr Vance ordered from Leeds never came. The ringmaster wants the lion-tamer's cloak finished for the Easter run. There will be no lion. There may be no Easter run. Nobody has said so aloud, but the bank man is due on Friday and the wagons have been sold off one by one.

The pattern is your mother's, copied from a shawl she wore to every fete in the county: a lotus of petals that curl inward, scrolls beneath, and a central bloom that closes like a fist. You work each dot close enough that the light passes through in a speckled fog, then go over the edges in heavy ink so they will hold when the lamp swings. Behind you the old elephant shifts on her straw, and Dennis the clown argues with himself about whose turn it is to sweep.
By Thursday the sheet is nearly full. At the heart of the bloom you leave a small clean space, and then you cannot decide what belongs there. You open the biscuit tin where the sequins are kept, count out the last three, and sew them beneath the petals, one under the other, the way rain hangs from a leaf after the storm has gone over.
Vance finds you at dawn, still in your coat, and holds the cloak up to the grey window. He turns it slowly, looking for the flaw. You wait for him to ask what the drops are for. Instead he folds it over his arm and says it is the finest thing this company has ever owned, and you know he means the drops, and that he will never be able to wear it.
