Realistic deer with antlers on the back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A standing deer with a full set of antlers is shown in profile, with its head turned towards the viewer. The spotted coat is rendered with stippled dots and soft shading, while the legs and underside are darker and more solid. The design sits alone on pale skin against a plain background, with the edge of a dark strap visible at the lower left.

The windfalls had gone soft in the long grass by the time you noticed the hoof prints, neat as stitching, pressed into the mud under the Bramley trees. Late August had a way of making everything heavy. The wasps drank from the split fruit and the air smelled of cider before anyone had pressed a single apple.

Mr Ashdown said the gap in the fence by the far rows had to be mended before the men came in October with their rifles and their clipboards. He said it twice across the yard, the second time while looking past you at the trees rather than at you. You nodded and took the wire cutters down from the nail by the shed door, then put them back again without knowing why.

The evening you found it, the sun was low enough to put coins of light between the leaves. The buck stood among the rows with its head turned back toward you, as if it had heard your boots and wanted to check you were still there. Its antlers rose like dry branches above the fallen fruit, and the spotted coat broke up in the dapple so that you could hardly tell where the tree shade stopped and the animal began. You stood very still. It did not run. It simply went on looking, patient, as though the choice of whether to be seen had been left with you.

You did not mend the fence that night. In the morning the grass was trodden flat in a neat path toward the hedge, the windfalls were gone, and the last gate was standing on its latch, open just wide enough for a deer to pass.
