Colourful Neo-trad style tattoo of a carousel horse with a striped pole, shown on the outer thigh.

Stained glass carousel horse on the thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A carousel horse with a braided blue and red mane and tail, a decorated bridle and a striped barber-pole style stand runs up the outer thigh. The horse is outlined in heavy black lines and filled with segmented panels that mimic stained glass, with grey shading on the body. Bright blue, teal, orange, red and yellow ink dominate the mane, saddle cloth and pole against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the fair came back to the rec field on Saturday, the same gaudy crowd as last summer, only the big carousel had a new horse on it, and I'm writing to tell you about her before Mam reads over my shoulder and says I'm wasting paper.

She's grey, Tom, grey like the slag heap in the rain, but someone has cut her out of coloured glass. Every patch of her is a different panel, blue in the mane, teal down the saddle cloth, orange and red plaited into a tail that goes on for ever. The man running the rides said the glass came from a chapel in Ferryhill that shut up when the church sold off its windows. I don't know whether that's true. He had the sort of hands that have told a lot of tales.

Dad took me on the ride after tea, when the lamps were lit and the pit whistle had gone quiet. Round and round we went, the organ wheezing and the striped pole going up and down beside us, and every time we passed the lights the horse lit up like a window in a dark church. I thought of you down the shaft, and how the lamp on your cap throws the same colours onto the rock.

Dad didn't say much. When the ride stopped he put a penny on the pole for the man and said, "Your brother would have liked that one." I hope you get the next fortnight off so you can see her. She won't be here long, they never are.
