Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A standing cat in a horizontally striped jumper and shorts is drawn in fine black linework with shaded fur. Cyrillic lettering sits below the figure in the same black ink. The design is shown in close view on a pale forearm, with partial edges of other tattoos visible at the frame's margins.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The trawler Lyudmila Ivanovna had a cat aboard before anyone had a name for him. Grigory swore the tom came up the gangway at Murmansk with a fish head in his mouth and the look of a man who had paid his passage. By the second week nobody remembered him as anything but crew. He ate from the galley bowl, slept on the coil of spare rope, and would not go below when the hold was being salted, which the men took as a sign of good judgement.

Mostly he watched. He sat on the rail in a knitted jumper with navy and white bands, made by Galina from the leftover wool of her own winter hat, and he would not take it off even in dry weather. The shorts came later, after the bosun bet a bottle of vodka that no cat could stand upright for a whole watch. The cat stood upright for eleven hours, then fell asleep on his feet against the winch. The bosun paid up, and Galina sewed the shorts that same night.

When the ice came in off the Kola coast and the radio went to static, the captain began calling him Morskoy Kotik, sea kitten, half as a joke and half as a rank. Men who had been frightened for days started talking to him at the rail. Grigory said it was the jumper that did it. Nobody argued.

We docked with a full hold and every man aboard. The cat went down the gangway first, stiff-backed, stripes straight, and did not look round at the harbour once. Nobody had to tell him where the quay was.
