Desert landscape in a circle on the lower leg

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A circular desert landscape showing a large pale moon, a mountain range and several saguaro cacti on open ground. The scene is built from fine stippled dots and short etched hatching lines, with denser shading along the edges of the mountains and the lower ground. The piece is entirely black and grey and sits centred within a clean circular boundary.

The ring cloth had split along one seam, so Teodor cut a circle from the old backdrop and told Ines it would do. She had spent the winter copying a postcard of Arizona onto it with a fine nib and a pot of ink that smelled of vinegar. The moon was pale as a dinner plate, the mountains were a row of teeth, and the saguaros stood with their arms raised as if someone had called them in for the night.

The circus was folding at the end of the season. The big top had been sold to a farmer in Wiltshire who wanted the poles for hay, and the lions had gone to a sanctuary in Kent. Only the horses were left, six greys who had never seen anything beyond the ring. Abel, who had trained them since before Ines was born, came to the lamp with his cap in his hands and asked whether she could put water on the far side of the picture, somewhere a horse could see from the centre.

She laughed at him, then didn't. She spent the last night dotting sand with a needle, each grain a small stubborn point, until the ground looked grainy and tired and real. Sometimes she thought the stipple was the only honest part, all those little marks adding up to a place nobody had ever walked.

In the morning the cloth was rolled and loaded onto a flatbed. Abel led the greys out one by one, and each stopped at the gap where the ring had been, lowered its head, and blew softly at the flattened grass. Ines watched from the gate. The circle of bare earth was all that remained of the show, and the horses seemed to be reading it.
