Small star constellation on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small constellation tattoo on the inner wrist, made of about ten tiny solid black dots. Faint grey lines link some of the dots, suggesting the outline of a star pattern. The ink is black only, placed centrally on pale skin with a plain dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming in sideways under the tarpaulin since six, and by half past the market at Saltergate there was only me, a paraffin heater, and forty boxes of paperbacks nobody wanted. I was sorting my dad's star atlases into piles when a lad in a sodden parka stopped at my trestle and asked if I had anything for the night he was born.

I said that depended on the date. He gave me a Tuesday in March, a time, and the postcode of a maternity ward that had closed years ago. I went through the almanacs with my thumb, licking it each time like a fool, while he dripped onto the oilcloth. The sky that night was crowded with stars nobody had bothered to name, so I found the nearest thing: a page where someone, probably my dad, had pencilled faint lines between the points of light, joining them into a shape like a long-legged bird.

He squinted at it and said it looked like nothing much. I told him that was the trick of it. Those lines were never really up there. Some fellow on a hillside agreed to see a bird, everyone else followed, and the bird stuck. The stars are just far-apart lights with nothing joining them except what we decide.

He thought about that, then asked if I could copy only the dots onto the back of his receipt, no lines, just the ones that were actually there. I did it with a biro, ten small black specks in a loose scatter. He folded the paper into his pocket and walked off into the rain without once looking back at the bird.
