Cloud, feather and stars on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo runs from the upper chest over the shoulder, showing a small outlined cloud, a feather, and two stars linked by a dotted trail and loose swirls. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with a few darker fills on the star and feather. The ink is black on pale skin, and the photo is framed tightly on the shoulder and collarbone with the face cropped out.

Dear Marnie,

Ward 9 has been unusually quiet since the fire alarm test, so I'm writing this on the back of a drug round sheet while the kettle takes its time. You'll laugh, but the thing I can't stop thinking about is the feather.

It came in through the gap at the top of the window in bed four, around two, and drifted down the length of the ward in lazy loops, the way things do when nobody is in a hurry. Ellie Coyle, seven, watched it from her pillow with her one good eye, her mum asleep in the chair beside her. When I went over to catch it, she told me, very seriously, that it had fallen off a cloud and was trying to find its way back up. Then she took my biro and drew the route on the inside of her menu card: a dotted line from the window, a few swirls where it had spun, and two stars where it had stopped near the car park lamp. 'That's where it rested,' she said. 'Then it went up again.'

The porter says it was a pigeon's and I should stop being soft. Maybe he's right. But at four, when I took the blood pressures, I stood at the nurses' station and looked at the sky over the car park, the cloud lit orange from the bins, and I could see exactly where her line went.

I've kept the feather in my breast pocket. Ellie says it knows the way home when it's ready, so I'm not going to be the one to rush it.

Love, Jo
