Dear Tomas, the snow reached the second cairn on Tuesday, so Father has moved the mules into the lower byre and says you will not come back over the Col before the thaw. I am writing because the post boy cannot be trusted to keep anything dry. When the cloud sits on the peak, watch for the seven stars above the notch, the ones Grandmother called the Hare's Ears, and the crooked scatter of pinpricks beneath them. That is the only sky you can steer by up there.

The night you left, Ilse and I counted them from the roof until our fingers went numb. She swore the little cluster to the east was the hare running off with its ears in the air. We scratched the order of the stars into the slate above the byre door so we would not forget it, and the rain has nearly taken them, but you will know the shape. Do not laugh when you see it. Father says it is the best map anyone in this valley has ever drawn.

Yesterday a man came up from the village with a sack of salt and asked whether the pass was open. I told him what I tell everyone, that the stars never close. He laughed at first, then tipped his head back and went quiet for a long while, and I think he was counting too. He went down before dark and we have not seen him since, which is how it goes with people who come up here asking questions.

So keep the bright one with the steady eye on your left shoulder until the path bends toward the hut. When you get there, light a fire and count them one more time, and I will know you have arrived, because the lower valley is the only thing I can see from my window tonight. Your sister, Greta.
