Star constellation tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A person seen from behind, with long dark hair covering the head, wears a dark sleeveless top and sits in a car with a steering wheel visible. The tattoo on the upper back near the shoulder is a constellation of small dotted lines joined by tiny star shapes, drawn in fine line work with no shading. The ink appears purplish against the skin, and the design sits off-centre in a dim, close-cropped photo.

The road out of Marrin Wells runs dead straight for ninety miles, and after the last petrol station the only lights are the ones we bring ourselves. Dad kept the dashboard dimmed so he could see the sky through the windscreen. He would tap the glass where the stars were thickest and make me join them up with my finger.

Those are the Ferryman's Hands, he said, though I never found a ferryman in them. Three bright points and a scatter of smaller ones, joined by lines that only existed because he said they did. He told me the lines were how you remembered a place, that every star you could name was a stopping point on a journey somebody had already made. I thought it was nonsense until the winter the depot shut and he drove the last load out with me in the passenger seat, counting the stops off on the glass.
Near the salt pan the engine coughed and we coasted onto the verge with the hazards ticking. He got out, walked a little way into the scrub, and came back saying the sky had moved. It had not. He had simply stopped looking at the lines and started looking at the gaps between them, where the dark ran deep enough to hold a whole town of other suns.
We waited for the recovery truck with the engine off and the door propped open. Before dawn I breathed on the window and traced the shape in the fog, dot by dot, the way he had taught me. Some roads you never finish. You just keep the map.
