Script quote on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a thin, handwritten script tattoo in dark ink running diagonally across the shoulder, ending in a small star-like mark. The linework is fine and even, with a slight cursive slant. The background is pale and soft, and the warm skin tones and loose, dark hair frame the tattoo.

Gulls walk the gallery rail like clerks waiting for a bus that never comes.

Cousin Piers brought the fuel out on Tuesday along with a sack of onions and news that a café in Penzance now serves crêpes as wide as cartwheels. I thought of you saying the pastry was never thin enough. I told him to stop talking about food. He asked what was wrong with me, and I did not know how to say that the sea has been quiet for a month and I have started counting nights by the small star that clears the Gannet Stack just after ten.

This morning, scrubbing salt off the lens, I found a scrap of paper wedged behind the brass housing, where you hid notes for me when we were children. It held only the words you always wrote at the foot of your letters, and below them a star with a tail, drawn in one quick stroke of the nib, as if you had been in a hurry to get to the end.

I am coming in on Thursday's boat. Keep the kettle warm and leave the lamp unlit until I can see you on the slip. Je t'aime pour toujours. Ton Hal.
