Old Mrs Haddow kept the walled garden at the top of the village, and every summer a scorpion came up out of the rhubarb to sit on her wall at dusk. She never killed it. She left a saucer of water on the coping stone and told the children it was keeping watch for the night's weather.

One August the vicar's boy came up the lane with a jam jar and a notion. He wanted the creature for his collection and said so loudly enough that the blackbirds stopped singing. Mrs Haddow asked him only to wait until the lamps were lit. He sat on the gate and counted the windows below, and when the sky went the colour of slate, the scorpion climbed to the top of the wall and lifted its tail, and the first stars came out along the length of it, one after another, as if someone were pinning them up.

The boy watched until the tail curled over the hedge and the brightest star burned above the orchard. He understood then what she had been telling him. The jar stayed empty in his coat pocket. He walked home that night by the stars, following the dotted line of them down the hill, and he never once lost the road.

The scorpion came back every summer after that, and every summer it set its tail over the garden so the village would know which way was north.
