Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Nine five-pointed stars run diagonally down the centre of the back, ranging from small solid stars to larger outlined stars with inner fills. The tattoos are in black ink only, set against the bare skin with no other background elements in frame.

The night before the wedding, Nell Harrow climbed the loft ladder to count the stars through the gap in the slates, because her grandmother said a bride ought to know what she was taking on. He had come courting with a promise, the way lads did in those parts, and the promise was that he would give her the sky a piece at a time. Her father laughed at him and her mother did not. So at the wedding breakfast, when the cake was cut and the fiddler had gone off for ale, Tobias took Nell out to the lane and showed her what he had been doing with his evenings. Down the length of the old stone wall ran nine stars, cut into slate with a chisel and a nail, some left as hollow frames and some filled solid with tar, climbing from the gatepost towards the church. Each one, he said, was a thing he meant to do for her. The hollow ones were still to be done.

Nell counted them twice. Eight she could see plainly. The ninth was a small hollow star at the very bottom, almost in the mud, with nothing inside it at all. Ask me what it is, he said, when you have found it. She stood a long while with her skirts muddied, and then she took the chalk from her pocket and filled it with a dot no bigger than a barley grain. It was not the whole sky, but it was a start, and she told him so before they went back in to the fiddle.
