Outline stars on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of six five-pointed star outlines of varying sizes sits on the side of the neck, with the largest star at the centre. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink, with no shading or fill. The soft, neutral background and the visible hair and necklace keep the focus on the small design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has reached your knees by the time the lantern gutters, and Tobiah is already ahead on the switchbacks, cursing the mule under his breath. You stop where the path bends round the cairn and tip your head back, because the cloud has finally torn open and the sky above the Veyra Col is so crowded with light it almost hurts.

You learned the cluster from your grandmother, who said it was the Hen and her six chicks, though nobody in the valley had ever seen a hen up here. Six small stars sit in a loose curve beneath one larger, and the largest is the one you steer by when the path vanishes. Tonight you count them twice. Five. Then the sixth slips out from behind a drift of cloud and you breathe again.

Tobiah calls back that the mule has stopped. You go down the path to him with the lantern held low, and the mule's ears are turned toward the dark gully on the left, where the wind is making a sound like someone humming. You tell him it is only the wind. He does not believe you, and neither do you, but you both walk on.

At the top of the col the cloud is gone entirely. You set the lantern on a flat stone and look for the big star, the one at the centre of the hen's little brood, and it is exactly where it has always been, steady as a nail driven into a beam. Tobiah asks which way the inn is. You point, and for once you don't have to guess.
