The snow had already buried the lower road when Tomas decided to take the mules over the Col de Varenne anyway, and by midnight the lead animal had stopped pretending to trust him. He walked at its head with a lantern he kept shuttered, because the light made the drifts look like floor and the floor looked like nothing at all. Above the ridge the cloud tore open now and then, and he would stop, stamp his boots, and look for the three stars his sister had made him memorise before he was tall enough to carry salt.

Marta had kept her star ledger in an oilcloth pocket, pages soft as bread from her thumb. The big bright one over the saddle was the first to go behind weather, and she had always said that was its way of being honest. The small one beside it burned like a pin pushed through black card. The third was the one that wandered, which she had drawn with a solid black point and a thin outline, because, she said, a thing that moves deserves a firm edge so you can tell where it has been. He had thought that was nonsense at nine. At forty-one, with the mules coughing their breath into the air, he thought it might be the only sensible thing she had ever written.

The wandering star slid behind a shoulder of rock just before the cairn. Tomas stood still and waited, the rope cutting into his palm, until the cloud thinned again and the small star appeared low and steady above the notch. He turned the mules towards it and kept walking. The hut's shutter was open when they reached it, and inside, someone had left a stub of candle burning in the window for whoever came up that night. He tied the animals, went in, and took the ledger out of his coat. Beneath her last entry he drew one more star, solid, and wrote the date beside it.
