Purple and blue stars on the hip
Other · Colour · Photo
A cluster of stars of varying sizes sits on the side of the hip, with curved trails sweeping across the skin. The stars are outlined in dark ink and filled with blue and purple shading, with soft airbrushed grey and lilac haze behind them. The composition flows diagonally from upper left to lower right, and the black waistband of a bikini bottom sits along the bottom edge.

The stars came down over Lower Wexham the week after the threshing, six of them at once, trailing pale wakes across the hill as if someone had drawn them with a wet thumb. Old Mrs Gedge said they were stars that had grown too heavy for the dark and had to be set down somewhere. Nobody believed her until Tom Pell's father found one in the stubble, cool and blue as a bruise, with a thin trail of light still curling off the stone.

Tom carried the star to the mill pond in a biscuit tin lined with his sister's old vest. He had heard that stars only settle where water can hold them, so he waited until the lamp in the Co-op window went out and the sky turned the deep violet of ink left standing in a pot. Lilac haze spread out from the bank, and the trails came with it, sweeping over the water in long diagonal strokes.
The star would not sink. It turned slowly on the surface, giving off grey smoke that smelled of struck matches, and then it began to climb. Tom lay on the planks with his chin over the edge and watched it rise, drawing the others up behind it one by one, until the whole cluster hung above the mill like a handful of dropped coins that had decided to stay in the air.
In the morning the pond was flat and brown, and the tin held nothing but a single blue pebble. Mrs Gedge took it from him, turned it over, and pressed it back into his palm. 'They only come down for the ones who go looking,' she said. Tom kept the pebble on the windowsill for years, and every night he checked the sky for the place where it had come from.
