Starfleet insignia with doodle fill
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a pointed, delta-shaped Starfleet insignia. The shape is filled with dense doodles, including swirls, paisley-like curls, flowers and dotted patterns, with a large white star at the centre. The words To Boldly Go sit in a banner across the lower section, and the design is shown in black and white.

Desmond never danced the quickstep properly. He said the floor was too honest for him. He sat at the corner table of the Cygnet Ballroom every Thursday with a biro and the back of his dance card, drawing while the band from Walsall played the same three tunes. By the second interval the card was a fence of curls, daisies and tiny dots, and he'd push it across the table to me with a look like he'd landed a big one.

The first time I saw the starship he'd drawn, it was a pointed delta with a star left white in the middle, like a hole punched for a ribbon. "Captain's bridge is cramped," he said, "so I've put the lettering where the sails go." Along the bottom he'd written To Boldly Go, the letters wobbling as if they'd been waltzed. I told him it was daft for a grown man to be mad about space. He said the stars were the only things up there that kept still while everything else spun.
Then the hall changed hands. The new owners ripped out the sprung boards for carpet tiles and the band was replaced by a karaoke machine. Desmond stopped coming in February. In April I found his last card in the lost property box under the stage, rolled tight with a perished elastic band, the whole thing covered edge to edge in pen work and not one dancer's name on it.
I took it out to the car park and unrolled it under a streetlight. The star in the middle was still blank paper, and I understood he'd left it empty on purpose, so whoever found it could fill it in. I went back inside, slipped off my shoes, and waltzed the last slow number across the carpet tiles with the card held against my chest, humming through the gap in the middle.
