Five-petal flower tattoo design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical five-petalled flower drawn in bold black outlines on a white background. Each petal is filled with flowing curved lines, spiral swirls, dotted accents and fine hatched bands that radiate from a small central point. The design is entirely black ink with no shading or colour.

Dear Nell, the pattern came back from the Gosse shop with its centre pricked wrong, so I have spent three nights picking it out by the stove, and I am not sure I have finished being cross about it.

It is a flower with five petals, the sort Mr Penhale wants stitched onto a christening bonnet for the Trelawney girl. Every petal is full of curls and dots and those narrow hatched bands that run in from the edges like rain on a window. Grandmother used to say a good pattern hides its own grammar. I thought she meant nothing by it.
Last night, with the lamp turned low, I laid the paper on the table and traced the hatched bands with my finger from the outside in. They do not meet in the middle. They turn. Each one bends round the one before it and points, quite plainly, at the gap between Gull Rock and the mouth of the harbour, the way the water runs when the wind is in the south. Five petals, five channels. Grandmother drew the sandbar into lace before any chart in this town was printed.
I have pricked the centre again, carefully, and left the dots where the water is shallow. Tell Mr Penhale the bonnet can wait. Tell the lifeboat coxswain to come and look before Sunday, because the flower is not finished yet, and I would rather he saw it on the table than read about it in the paper.
Your loving sister, Ada
