Stargate-style ring with glyph on upper chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular tattoo shows an outer ring divided into segments with triangular notches, enclosing a shaded grey disc. A bold black angular symbol with a small dot above it sits at the centre. Black linework and grey shading give the design depth against the skin, and the photograph is taken at a slight angle with a dark fabric visible at the left edge.

Sit down, boy, and mind the wet on that stone, it's been there since before your mother's mother. Look up at the top of the pass where the cairn leans. You see the ring of flat stones? Count them with me. Twelve, and one missing where the snow took it in the winter of the bad sheep. Stand in the middle of them at dusk and the ground hums like a kettle nobody's lit.

My grandfather said a man from the valley walked up there with a lamp, a dog and a tin of biscuits, because that is what men carried in those days. He found the ring, and on the largest stone he found a mark cut in the shape of a lambda with a dot above it, like a bird's eye watching him. He put his palm on the dot. The dot was warm. The ring began to turn, one stone after another, the way a clock face turns when the hands have got into the wrong order.
He did not go through. Nobody goes through without the right word, and the word, Dai swore, was the name of the dog. The dog would not come near him. So the man stood there until the moon came over the ridge, the cut mark lit up pale as a fish belly, the ring stopped turning, and he walked home down the scree with his lamp and never told anyone what he had nearly been asked.
Last spring I went up with my own dog. She sat at the edge of the ring and looked at me the way your mother looks at the washing-up. So I know what she wants. Tomorrow you carry the tin, and we'll see whose name the dog answers to.
