Stars and swirls on the foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of outlined and solid five-pointed stars trails across the top of a foot, with thin curling swirls and small dotted accents. The linework is fine and even, with the larger stars filled in solid black for contrast. The tattoo is shown in black ink only, against the skin, with the open-toe shoe and red toenails visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Marvellini Brothers Circus had eleven stars left on its canvas, and Ada wanted every one of them redone before the lorries pulled out of Hadleigh Common. I was the one on the stepladder with a pot of silver gouache, because I was the only one who had ever painted a star before, on a bus shelter in Ipswich when I was nineteen and stupid.

Ada had been the box office for thirty years and the ringmaster's widow for twenty of them. She stood below me with her arms folded and told me the stars were the only thing the children ever remembered, not the lions, which had gone to a sanctuary in Wales, and not the clown, who had gone to his sister's in Margate. A shooting star needs a tail, she said, or nobody knows it's moving.

So I painted the tail, a curl of swirls off the last star, trailing down toward the sawdust with small dots like sparks thrown off a wheel. The gouache dried fast under the work lights. When I came down the ladder, Ada had her coat on and was looking up, not at the stars but at the rigging where the lights hung, and she said they'd be visible from the A12 in the morning if the sun caught them right. We were gone by six. From the lane I looked back, and the top of the tent still held the first light in silver, eleven stars with their tails all pointing at the town we were leaving.
