It was long and pale as a bone-handled knife, with a round dish set at the front of it and two slim pillars riding under its back like stilts. It hung above the headland the way a gull hangs over a fish it has not yet decided on. Its lights were the colour of his own brass lamp, and a hum came up through the rock and into his boots.

At first light the ship was gone and the sea lay flat and empty. On the gallery rail sat a square of paper folded once, with a drawing of the same long ship and a few careful words in a hand he knew: I am still on my way, Dad. Keep the lamp lit for the bright road. Ansel tucked it inside his coat and went down to put the kettle on.
